Alfred Nzo is an example of a revolutionary whose economic status of the family could not destroy the love for freedom and the determination to achieve it. His leadership by example became a source of inspiration for many who admired him. Comrade Alfred Nzo was born in Elliot into a poor family, which migrated to Modderbee mines in Benoni when he was still very young. That he matriculated at the age of 20 years despite the poor family background at a time when the value of a matric certificate was something to be proud of was in itself a major achievement. He then enrolled for BSC degree in Fort Hare in 1945. He dropped out in the second year of his studies. Because no details are provided for dropping out we are forced to assume that lack of finance should have been the reason. We can equal speculate that his activism led to his exclusion from the university. Although he left the academic process he started what was to become the beginning of dedicating his entire adult life to the struggle for liberation. It is in the University of Fort Hare that Oom Alf joined the ANC Youth League....
